2012

Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful festive period.

I'm not one for making New Years' Resolutions as if you think about it, the essence of our Promise should be one to spur us on i.e. to do our best, and to be kind and helpful. For me this is more meaningful and something I try to achieve.

As we go into the New Year it's time for us to implement our new programmes. It's great to have a programme as it means we've put some thought into what we want to do, and roughly how we're going to achieve it. The question is though, how do you know if you're programme has been a success? What measures are you going to use? Measures can include the number of young people and adults who regularly participate in activities, the number of Activity Badges or Challenge Awards achieved, or the number of Chief Scout or Queen's Scout Awards presented. There's a common theme here; numbers!

As you'll be aware the census is coming up, although really this is a measure of how we did in the previous year. If you're consistently providing high quality activities that reward members for their achievements, then generally your numbers are going to grow. This is true whether you work within the Sections, or manage and support adults.

In 2012, let's ensure that we do our best to ensure we provide engaging programmes that encourages attendance at all levels, and reward appropriately. Let's face it, if we can't provide a varied programme in an Olympic year then there's something wrong. Think about your programme zones. As a minimum you should be able to work Global and Fitness into your programme and easily link these into 'Outdoor and Adventure'. Values and Relationships/Beliefs and Attitudes can easily link into the Global theme. I'm sure you can make links to the other programme zones, which should ensure we present more Challenge Awards and hopefully, more Chief Scout and Queen's Scout Awards.

If we deliver good programmes during the year we should be able to grow our numbers. Next year's census will be our ultimate measure with regards to how well we've done this year.

Let's do our best and work with each other to ensure we deliver high quality Scouting.
