Cub Camp

With summer on its way, we had a busy few weeks at Cubs before the summer holidays. First Group camp, then District camp two weeks later!

The weeks running up to camp were taken up with teaching the Cubs on what to bring, and in some cases not to bring to camp, how to look after the kit and how to pitch and strike camp, as the majority had not been away with Cubs before.

Group camp was first, this was held at Gladstone, on the hottest weekend of the year! We had some new and old scouting skills, (this was in between making sure the Cubs were caked in sun cream). They ranged from firelighting and backwoods cooking, to circus skills and Wag Tags - the police and mountain rescue dogs.

District camp was next, were we couldn't get a more different weekend - weather wise, where we were lucky the tents still stood by the Sunday.

The theme was Africa, as the World Cup was being held there, so to start off we had a World Cup competition. Saturday was bases with each Cub pack running one, there was wind shields, safari orienteering, African dancing and songs to name a few of the activities. We finished off the night with a campfire, were the Cubs did a lot of stunts and sketches. On Sunday we had a silly games relay and a circus workshop.

A tiring but fun few weeks had by all, and a well earned rest for the leaders before it all starts again in September.

St George's Day

Up to the run up to St. George's day the Cubs have been learning about Scouting around the world, different countries and of course St. George.

We've learnt about the different promise, the different uniforms worn, what flags and traditions they have.

Then for St.George's we learnt about how he slayed the dragon, then we made dragons out of recyclable materials.

We celebrated St. George's Day by going to Loggerheads, were it was beautiful and sunny. The Cubs went on a nature trail and ended up at Devil's Gorge, we're we had lunch and played in the river. On the way back we walked along the river and skimmed stones.

At the end of the day we renewed our promises.

We all went home, tired but happy

80 years of fun

2010 is 2nd Rhyl's 80th year and all year we are having different events.

To start it off we had a birthday party held at Rhyl Leisure Centre, where we had Circus Skills, inflatables in the pool and to end the day we had a presentation of a specially designed badge by the Mayor of Rhyl.

In District we have had the bi-annual handicraft competion, held at Prestatyn. There were 3 categories: individual artwork, best Pack effort and best use of recycled material. These were won by 1st Rhyl, 6th Prestatyn and 2nd Rhyl.

Also 3rd and 6th Prestatyn went to RAF Cosford were they did the Air Activity badge, a good day was had by all.
