A group of Scouts from Wrexham recently visited the new Wrexham Islamic Cultural Centre in the former Miners Institute in Grosvenor Road. K2 Explorer Scouts went along to discover more about the centre's development for themselves, find out about Islam, and to foster links with the Muslim community in the town.

The teenaged Scouts took a tour of the building, sat in on evening prayers and had a chance to put any questions the may have about the place of Islam in today's Britain. Questions were asked about how barriers could be broken down, about Islam's views on science and about the differences in how ceremonies such as marriages and funerals are performed.

Explorer Scout Alice Hardwell, 14 from Holt, said: ''I thought the visit was very interesting and informative, because they told us about the religion and the laws of which they follow. I thought it was important that the Islamic Centre should stay there, otherwise they would not have a place to worship and they would be forced to worship in their homes. So it is important that they have a dedicated place to worship just as Christians do.''

During their visit the Scouts welcomed members of the Muslim community to join their local Scout Group. Explorer Scout Leader David Morris said: ''Many people think that the Scouts is just for Christians, but in fact due to Scouting's popularity in countries like Indonesia there are more Muslim Scouts than Christian Scouts. Here in the UK there are several Muslim Scout Groups, but the vast majority of groups accept young people and adults whatever faith they follow.''
