October news

We are in the running for a grant of up to 6,000 from NatWest if we get enough votes. Please visit http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/4751, log on and vote. Then send the link to as many friends, family and work colleagues as you can. We only have until 23rd October.

We plan to use the funds to overhaul the Scout hut grounds to make it a much more practical area by rebuilding the crumbling brick perimeter wall and topping with security fencing, raise the flower beds for the younger children to maintain, add vegetable beds to encourage self sufficiency and educate, revamp the campfire area to accommodate more people, tidy around the back of the hut to make it a useable area and replace the uneven paved entrance path.

Support needed, Can you or someone you know Volunteer.

We need at least 4 more Parents on the Exec committee, they meet 3 times a year to make decisions on the running of the group, support fundraising and are on sub projects while we look for a grant to repair our hut. Do you or any one you know fit this role it could be a Grandparent or friend. Please contact me on the details below if you can help.

We need Cub leaders to start a new Friday night pack in Feb 2012, we are currently full in Cubs and Scouts and after the success of our second Beaver Colony wish to carry on and open our second Cub pack. Do you know of anyone who could volunteer a few hours a week, full training is given, come join the fun..

Caretaker, It would be great if anyone knew of someone who my wish to look after the Scout hut on a weekly basis, Nothing to big just brushing, litter picking, painting etc.. Please let me know.

Subs

As of January 2012 subs will have to be raised to 30 a term, this is due to the increase of almost 9 in insurance since we last budgeted 3 yrs ago, and the ever increasing cost of electric. Please contact me if you would like to ask any questions.

Fundraising Support

15 OCT, we have a clothing collection, please check your wardrobes and draws for old clothes bag them up and drop them off at the hut between 10am and 1pm on the 15th. If you need help with a collection from your home just ask. If you need to drop off before please do so on your young person's section evening and hand them in.

3rd /10th DEC, Real Xmas tree sales, just like last year we will be selling real Xmas trees, range of sizes and at a good price please tell you friends and family. Flyer and order slip to follow, early Nov.

Kitchen Equipment

We have a shortage of kitchen equipment for baking and cooking at the Hut and often are not able to involve everyone as we would like to. Do you have spare scales, mixing bowls, wooden spoons, baking trays, tea towel, rolling pins, pans etc.... If you have anything you could let us have please just hand it to any leader.

Support request

Tesco and Sainsbury vouchers

We're collecting both the Sainsbury Active Kids and Tesco School and Clubs vouchers, so would appreciate, if you could ask for them when you do your shopping and bring them in to the hut. Please ask friends and family if we can have their vouchers too. These are handed out with petrol, so don't miss them off the forecourt.

There are boxes at the back of the hut for these to be placed in.

Clothing recycling

We had a great response last year when we did this, and raised 207. This was with only a quarter of the group joining in. Please could I ask every adult reading this just to have a quick check through the wardrobes and draws and get rid of those unwanted items of clothing, bag it up and drop it off at the hut. We can recycle any clothing, belts, shoes and hand bags. Again please ask friends and family to help out, I did this last year and collected 20 bags from my family.

This is an easy low effort fundraising event that the group gets a fair return on, please help. We will be collecting and sorting the clothes at the hut Saturday 2/4/2011, from 10am till 1pm. If you are unable to drop off clothes on the Saturday please bring them on the section night before the 2/4/2011 that your child attends. If transport is an issue just let us know, we can arrange a collection.

Giving Machine

We now have a link to the giving machine on the front page. How does it work - before you go internet shopping you enter the giving machine site, pick 1st Rhosnesni Scout Group to donate to. Then choose which companies site you wish to go shopping on. These companies then give us a donation every time you shop. Please tell a friend etc...

All the super markets are on so if you weekly shop for food on the net, please support us it cost you nothing, just the few seconds to visit our site first.

Dates to be supported

9th April - Hug the Hut, bring along a paint brush, duster or a garden fork. Time for a spring clean.

12/13th June - Car Boot sale, start collecting we need your unwanted items and help on the day.

Queen's Scout Awards for Rhosnesni members

Congratulations to Cub Scout Leader Pari and Group Executive member Adam who have been awarded the Queen's Scout Award - the highest youth training award in Scouting.

Pari and Adam have put in months of hard work to achieve this award, including learning a new skill, doing regular physical recreation, volunteering in the community, going on a residential experience and undertaking a 4 day expedition.

Both will be invited to Windsor Castle next year and are exceptional examples to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the Group.

Work started on hut

We're pleased to announce that the first phase in the planned improvements to the hut has started.

The fire door has been moved from the back of the building to the side with the back being sealed up. This has several benefits: the door is wider than before making an emergency exit easier and the exit is onto the grass at the side where there is more room; it also makes it easier and safer to get out onto the grass in the summer; the blocking of the old fire door is better for security and now makes the back corridor redundant resulting in more space for improved toilet facilities in the future.

Also to be done soon (it may even have been done by now) is the sanding and sealing of the floor. This will remove the risk of splinters that we've been living with for several years. Beavers and Cubs will be able to safely play on the floor without harm.

Future plans include improved toilet facilities and a new roof. Watch this space!

UPDATE - apparently the floor and front door are being done this Thursday and Friday

Posted at 10:06, 31/08/2009

UPDATE 2 - Front door now done. It opens outwards now which is better for security, and is a lot sturdier than before. It's actually a new frame with the existing door. The floor has also been sanded and sealed. We're getting there!

UPDATE 3 - work continues on the hut. Over the summer we, with lots of help from parents, did up the front of the building, we also now have external lights. Work has started on the kitchen and toilets, the door from the toilets to the kitchen has been closed off and preparations made for a new kitchen to be fitted. Thanks to Butcher and Adam for all their hard work here.

UPDATE 4: Kitchen now finished, work started on toilets...

Next major project is replacing the roof which is leaking quite badly. Anyone got a few thousand pounds!!!? Please!

UPDATE 5: Toilets now finished!

1st Rhosnesni Scout Group meet in our own Scout hut in Dean Road Wrexham

We have two Beaver Scout Colonies - Summer on Tuesdays and Autumn on Wednesdays, Cubs meet on Wednesdays and Scouts meet on Fridays.

Our neckerchief is red with a yellow border

Our Group badge features our old necker colour of green, our Scout hut roof, and 1910 - the year we were founded.

We're the oldest Group in Wrexham - and so have a bit of history! Here is a picture of our hut being opened. Things have changed a bit since then!

Here is the letter from our Group Secretary to Mrs Whyte who gifted the land for the Scout hut to be built on:
